Registration Fees/Associated Costs
In May 2024, the Eastern Panhandle Swim Club, LLC (EPSC) was formed to act as the umbrella company to manage the competitive swim programs at Shepherd, in partnership with the Shepherd University Wellness Center (SUWC). Participation on swim team therefore requires fees to be paid to both SUWC for practice time in the pool, and then additionally to EPSC for competitive team management such as season and practice planning, meet set-up and coaching, coaching development, insurances, and all other costs involved with running a competitive team.
EPSC and SUWC fees must be paid before a swimmer is able to practice, and USA Swimming fees must be paid for before they register for their first meet. Registration comes with an expectation of whole-season commitment; participants who leave early are still responsible for the entire EPSC fee. If a swimmer does need to leave the team early, they do not have to pay the upcoming SUWC practice installments, but the SUWC practice fee will not be prorated mid-installment. Swimmers are required to notify the head coach, Erica Wheatley, in writing ([email protected]) if they choose to discontinue the program.

*EPSC Competitive Swim Team is not swim lessons. Swimmers ages 8 & under must be able to swim the length of a 25 yard pool, unassisted, in freestyle and backstroke, as well as have a basic grasp of breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers ages 9 & up must be able to swim 50 yards, unassisted, in freestyle and backstroke, as well as have a basic grasp of breaststroke and butterly.
They need to be ready to focus and work hard in a competitive environment.
Tryouts and Coach Approval apply in most cases. Please see the How to Join Page for more information.
Practice Group Descriptions
BRONZE Practice Group
Bronze is our entry level group with swimmers in 4th grade and below. Our primary focus is on developing stroke technique, building good habits, and having fun. In addition to learning all four strokes, we introduce racing starts, turns, and learn how to swim in a lane with others. Bronze group swimmers swim three days/week for 1 hour and are encouraged to swim in a couple meets over the year to have goals to work towards in practice to introduce them to the world of competitive swimming in a supportive environment.

SILVER Practice Group
Our Silver group, with swimmers in 5th-7th grade, works to develop all four strokes. Swimmers begin to work on maintaining their form over longer distances in freestyle. We continue to develop our efficiency in backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Greater emphasis is placed on underwaters - developing strong underwater dolphin kicks and breaststroke pullouts. Silver swimmers swim 2-3 days/week for 1 hour and we encourage our swimmers to swim regularly in meets, in general about 1/month. Swimmers are sometimes deciding at this age what their ‘main’ sport is. We support this group playing multiple sports and developing overall athleticism.

The expectations for this group are 2-3 days/week for 1 hour. Some swimmers in this group are preparing to compete for their high schools and others use swimming as a complement to another sport. Others are looking to work their way up to the Platinum Gold group. We strongly support our swimmers in pursuing their goals and emphasize communication so we can help realize those goals.

Swimmers are committed to swimming 5-6 days/week for 1-2 hours as well as supporting their swim training with dryland workouts. We are always working on stroke refinement and building speed and endurance to compete in 100s and 200s of stroke as well as 200 and 400 IM’s and occasional distance events. Swimmers are expected to compete in meets over the year, generally 1/month with a focus placed on championship meets.

Homeschool group swimmers swim three days/week for 1 hour and are encouraged to swim in a couple meets over the year to have goals to work towards in practice and see all that hard work pay off! NOTE: SUWC is a Hope Scholarship Provider. If you are using Hope funds to cover team practices, please email both Coach Erica ([email protected]) and Andria Leach, ([email protected]), to reserve your reserve your spot. Then when your funds are available in August, Andria will work to apply those funds to team. EPSC is also planning on becoming a Hope Scholarship Provider and will send out that information later in August also (to use Hope funds to pay EPSC Team Fees).
